Green School Community Service and Field Trips

service 3

Putting our class lessons into action is a very important part of the Green School mission. A great way to do that is to lend a hand with a local organization and make a real, measurable difference in improving our local community.

table talk 1On selected days, outside of classroom time, students will meet-up at community service sites and complete a contracted number of supervised hours that will teach them valuable real world responsibility, accountability and teamwork skills.

These service learning hours count towards their annual award certificate requirements. A great outcome is gaining the satisfaction of being an important contributor to improving their community.

Community Service is where we Act Local

in response to what we’ve learned in class

about Global Challenges.

honaunau 1Once a month we will schedule an optional Friday community service day and invite all of our Green Schoolers to join us at a special project site. Students are also welcome to arrange their own service agreements and can count those towards their annual award certificate hours. We may help out on a local farm, assist with art projects for seniors, help gather food for the food bank, clean-up a park or beach, and the team energy will really turn these into fun adventures. Parents will provide transportation to the community service sites. We suggest 2 hours a month for this optional activity.

Once a session, the Green School also hosts a Family Field Trip to a learning location that will give the whole family a chance to stretch their imagination, discover some WOW, and bond as a family. Parents will provide transportation to the field trip sites. These often include a service learning component.
