What does 2020 Hold?

A Pivotal Year for Sustainability Initiatives

With programs in two states this year, a lot of intersting work and services are going on. Continuing our advocacy for rural community strengthening htrough Art, Farms, Food and Sustainable Living – we are building on past experiences and forging new paths with new discoveries.

San Juan Islands, Washington

In the San Juan Islands off the north coast of Washington, we are hosting the ONE CANOE fresh and healthy food program with a Veggie Rx emphasis. We are assisting with the San Juan Agricultural Guild by serving on the Board, and building partnerships across the food system to help link any resident to nutritious local food access.

In addition to Food Justice work in the Pacific Northwest, One Island is assisting in the formation of  the SAN JUAN MAKERS GUILD to provide services to the burgeoning Makers Movement in these remote islands that are rich with creative minds and hands. The Guild is hosting seasonal Makers Fairs and Makers Strolls to strengthen the local makers economy.

Ben Casuga House View 10In Hawaii, the solar powered air-to-water systems in the Village of Miloli’i have been installed – first community-owned fresh drinking water ever generated on site. Next up we are doing a pilot of solar powered hydroponic grow towers to increase access to homegrown local greens and veggies – even strawberries! Along with bringing solar power and energy efficiency to many homes in the village, we are also working on a larger scale solar power and solar water installation for the new Cultural Center that plans to provide education, cultural history, commercial kitchen, and economic development opportunities for local residents.

Lokahi 10The Same Canoe Local Food Challenge continues its Veggie Rx and SNAP coupon fresh produce services and classes through the summer with delicious CSA boxes filled with local produce straight from the farm available for our Veggie Rx participants and helath and wellness options. (At this time all Same Canoe membership slots are filled). We’ve been testing point of sale, direct mail, and workshop-tied food distribution to test ways to best engage local residents in considering Food as Medicine.

Produce partners include Adaptations Fresh Feast CSA and Lokahi Garden Sanctuary CSA in Kona, Waimea and Kohala. We also have greatly appreciated working with our retail grocery partners: Island Naturals in Kona, Choice MART in Captain Cook, Takata Store in Kapa’au, Kohala Grown Market, Healthways in Waimea, and The Country Market in Honoka’a to make fresh fruits and veggies more accessible. As part of our Food Justice work, we also have been working with over 50 farmers through the local farmers’ markets in Hawi, Honoka’a, Waimea, Kona and South Kona to increase local purchasing through SNAP and Veggie Rx programs.

A BIG MAHALO is due to our pioneering Veggie Rx clinic partners who have been testing ways to engage their patients in healthier eating options. Heartfelt thanks to West Hawaii Community Health Centers, Island Heart Care, Hamakua Kohala Health, Mango Medical, Kukui Lifestyle Medicine, Hawaii Family Physicians, The Koa Clinic, and Ka’u Wellness.

Local Farms are Good for Our Health!

We thank the USDA for providing primary support for these rural sustainability initiatives.
