The ONE CANOE food program is bringing local and healthy produce purchasing power to San Juan County participants in FRESH BUCKS and is launching a county-wide VEGGIE Rx program, 2019-2020.
Thanks to support from the USDA and management by the One Island 501c3 organization, ONE CANOE is bringing over $50,000 in fresh food access, culinary workshops, chef demos, and engagement with farm tours to limited income and health challenged individuals and households.
Community supporters include food coops, farmers markets, County Health Department, local health clinics, food banks, Community Resource Centers, and hunger organizations.
During 2020, classes on healthy food options and preparation, international culinary flavors, Grow it Yourself, family feasts and more farm tours are planned. Events are open to the public with One Canoe participants receiving bonus coupons for attending.
New to San Juan County is the One Canoe Veggie Rx program that works with local health providers to promote healthy eating and increased awareness of the health impacts of food choices. Produce coupons are issued under a provider’s Prescription as a health care component in a patient plan.
Fall 2019 events:
ONE CANOE provided $590 in produce coupons for Savor the San Juans farm tours, Sept 21-22 on San Juan Island and Sept 28-29 on Orcas Island. Qualified participants received $30 in coupons for use at approved farms during these fun weekend tours. Getting to Know Your Farmer is an important social, economic, and nutrition connection!
