WELCOME One Island is a non-profit sustainability program in the Pacific Northwest Triangle serving rural coastal areas of Hawaii, California and Washington. In response to the challenges of our time, our programs foster connections between inspired teachers and learners to strengthen creativity and resiliency in remote rural communities. Programs focus on short, easy-to-implement projects and longer term strategic sustainability efforts.

‘Green is a Verb’ – it is an empowering action we each can choose to do

Cornerstone initiatives have included: local food system strengthening, art and culture place-making events, renewable energy / green building, watershed protection, green economy incubation, and health and wellness efforts. We host regular volunteer learning days, green building and farm tours, and present special guest speakers and retreats that demonstrate a variety of ‘green values’ as sustainability options. Educational and fun hands-on ‘maker’ workshops turn our farm partner’s local resources into rewarding hand-built products – from food to art to body care, from building materials to home gardens to renewable energy – valuable skills you can take with you and enjoy where ever you live.

Green Building Tour to Hi’ilani Ecohouse in Honoka’a

With Tamale Making Class option, Sunday March 8th

The boldly dramatic Hi’ilani EcoHouse is our tour site on March 8th in Honoka’a. Built by two sustainability-minded couples who joined forces with an inventive designer, the house employs special green building materials and design techniques to conceive and build a dramatic perch overlooking the Pacific. This 4,000 square foot carbon-neutral home is worth a journey from around the island to see its innovative materials, structural design, interior finishing, energy efficiency, and green living concepts.

Suggested tour donation $15, with tamale plate $25.

Tamale Magic We have a culinary experience to share! We’ll be hosting a tamale making class using organic grains and sweet and savory ingredients from noon-2pm preceding the tour. All set to fun Latin music. Yum! Workshop fee is $25 and includes all ingredients to take home four tamales. Tour is free for workshop participants.

Green Think Tour to Bamboo and Clay Barn in Hawi

Join One Island for the next Green Think tour to a stunning ocean view location in North Hawi with a compound of innovative green-built residential structures. The Algood Farm is pioneering smart green construction materials including bamboo, clay, canvas yurt, reused materials and insulated block. Tour is by donation and all ages are welcome. Hawaiian Hand Made Paper Book Making Class Feb 8th

Sunday February 8^th 3-5pm in Hawi

Come enjoy the beautiful color and textures of handmade paper made from Hawaiian plants and learn to cover writing journals that you can take home to use or give as gifts. Artist Susan O’Malley is an expert papermaker and will lead this fun ‘green living’ workshop. Participant will make 4 books. Follows the Green Think Tour in the Algood Barn in Hawi. Bamboo Building Tour, Jan 11th

We had over 30 happy folks show up for the delightful afternoon of Bamboo Building introduction at the mind boggling LightWave Pavilion in Holualoa, with great music by Bolo, and delicious locally grown foods and drinks. Mahalo to the Boranians for building this art form and designer Leimana Pelton’s stroke of genius, and to Bolo for his original song writing. Green living at its finest!

Kona Green School Opens Sept 19th

The One Island facility has been transformed into the Green School learning lab for West Hawaii programs. Students from Waikaloa to Kona to Hilo will be convening for exciting learning programs.

We’ll be working and learning in an indoor/outdoor facility with abundant garden and farm resources, birds and butterflies, and refreshing breezes overlooking the sea. Learn more about The Green School here.

The Hawaii Farmers Union is part of a nationwide organization that is closely aligned with many local food grower’s interests: building healthy soils, growing and selling nutritious and organic foods.

Come learn about the Hawaii Farmers Union, what they stand for and what they have to offer Kohala farmers.

Current farmers, gardeners and land owners wanting to begin or expand operations are welcome – your voice is Wanted!

A Kohala Chapter is forming.

From the HFUU:

“With over 500 members Hawai‘i Farmers Union United (HFUU) is growing on the islands of Kaua‘i, O‘ahu, Maui, and on Hawai‘i Island in Kona, Ka‘u and Kohala. We are not a labor union, but an organization of smallholder, family farm oriented businesses and those who support us. HFUU’s cooperative, education and legislative efforts are particularly focused on the development of “regenerative” agriculture.

HFUU and its Chapters are constituent elements of the storied National Farmers Union (NFU). Founded in 1902, NFU is the oldest organization in the United States of family farm owners and managers and those who support them. NFU, HFUU and its Hawai‘i Chapters are dedicated to promoting the interests of the family farm through education, cooperation and legislation.

The National Farmers Union fostered the farm cooperative movement of the early 20th Century United States. It is a history HFUU plans to continue by working to restore organic matter back to the soil to support new crops with fewer imported amendments at reduced cost and increased profit. This idea is growing among all the counties of Hawai‘i and their traditional na ahupua‘a (mountain to sea land districts). ”

Green School Open House, South Kona

Family Field Trip to One Island’s Sustainable Living Center

Saturday, August 16^th, 9:30am-noon

Come explore the grounds of One Island’s living learning laboratory and enjoy witnessing the intersection of local foods, renewable energy, art, health and education in a beautiful open air facility and garden. We’ll go on a sustainability treasure hunt exploration.

Farm strolls are welcome 9:30am-noon.

An introduction to the Green School’s pioneering program and Fall 2014 ‘Food Chain Game’ class will begin at 10:30am. We have a delightful 2,500 sq ft classroom and meeting space overlooking Kealakekua Bay with bird song, butterflies, and a nature farm all around. The Green School offers two programs – one is a monthly Saturday GREEN CAMP for all ages. The second is a homeschool supplementary program with academic and hands-on service learning features with monthly and weekly program options. Classes start Sept. 19^th. Family involvement days include field trips and fun family workshops – first up is Family Papermaking on October 11^th with retired teacher and artist Susan O’Malley.

Bring the family! And maybe a lunch for down at one of the local waterfront picnic areas? Place of Refuge, Kealakekua Bay and Manini Beach are nearby.
