Camp Format and Content

The YES!! Camp invites 10-18 year olds to join us at the One Island Sustainable Living Center in Honaunau for a 5-day camp that will engage students in 10 learning activity programs on a 10 acre organic farm overlooking Kealakekua Bay. Each morning and afternoon we will examine our island’s sustainability challenges and then focus on different sustainability solutions. Hands-on projects provide engaging physical experiences that empower our students to become active change agents who can then contribute to their family – and to their community – with the new skills they are learning.

Participants will be challenged to address questions whose answers will give them tools to live more sustainably. They will work together on fun projects that help them find solutions to these questions. Solar Energy – how does it work and what types of solar power is available here in Hawaii? Organic Gardening – how do we grow our own local food – outside, in a green house, in vertical gardens – when soil and water can be a challenge? Watersheds – how does our local watershed work? What dangers do our local ecosystems face? And how does our personal behavior impact the quality of our drinking water and life in the sea? What wildlife can we protect in Hawaii and how? What local plants can become part of art and craft projects? How do music and the performing arts create community?

The day camp sessions begin at 9am and complete at 4pm, with early drop off / late pick-up by arrangement. Friday evening, students are invited to join in an overnight campout and drumming session around a campfire where we will cook our food and talk story by firelight. Tents and dinner will be provided. Camp size is limited and requires advance reservations and deposits. RSVP to hawaii@one-island.org.

SolFest

By the end of the week, students will have completed a special project of their own and on Saturday the 23rd, we open the Center’s doors to family and friends from the community to come see the students present what they have learned. This fun event, SolFest, is a summer solstice celebration and it begins with a pancake breakfast 9-10, features student presentations 10-11, and takes participants on a farm-wide tour 11-12 to see all of the learning tools that the students have been working with during their sustainability week. SolFest is a great opportunity to see the students’ accomplishments and to check out the wide variety of sustainability practices on display at One Island – plus the $10 pancake tickets raise funds for the YES!! Camp. The community is invited to join in the fun at SolFest, 9am-noon on Saturday the 23rd. Please RSVP to hawaii@one-island.org in advance so we can have great pancakes and fruit – and Kona coffee or local herbal tea – ready for your Saturday morning to celebrate the beginning of summer.
