This evening presentation will introduce a watershed view of Kona’s water system, with an emphasis on South Kona. Where are our reservoirs and wells? How do the well systems transport water to us and what happens in the event of well failure? What is a watershed and how do we care for it? Potluck 5-6pm, presentations 6-8pm. Representative from County Department of Water will speak. Held at the One Island Sustainable Living Center in Honaunau on Painted Church Rd. Please email to RSVP and for directions: hawaii@one-island.org.
The YES! Summer Youth Camp is going strong with raised bed, renewable energy, music, superfoods, swimming, fermented foods, electricity experiments, energy efficiency challenges, pollinator garden, and art projects underway so far. By Saturday they’ll have filled out the new Ancient Grains Garden, replanted the taro patch, addded new native plants – and maybe a few new spice trees to our Spice Island Garden.
Come see their results Saturday at SolFest, 9-1.
Pancake Breakfast Fundraiser, 9-10 am ($12 adults, $6 kids under 15). Student presentations and tours of projects 10-11:30. Same Canoe Garden Grant announcements 11:30. Farm tour noon-1pm. Please RSVP to hawaii@one-island.org
The YES!! Camp invites 10-18 year olds to join us at the One Island Sustainable Living Center in Honaunau for a 5-day camp that will engage students in 10 learning activity programs on a 10 acre organic farm overlooking Kealakekua Bay. Each morning and afternoon we will examine our island’s sustainability challenges and then focus on different sustainability solutions. Hands-on projects provide engaging physical experiences that empower our students to become active change agents who can then contribute to their family – and to their community – with the new skills they are learning. The 6th day is SolFest – a pancake breakfast and Open House inviting student’s families to come learn about their accomplishments.
One Island’s Buying Club is adding worm compost bins to our discount group buy offerings. These great 3 tray units allow you to turn paper and kitchen scraps into excellent fertilizers – worm castings, worm tea, and worm tea water. Three great ways to enrich your garden and grow healthier foods. The worm bins are $75 ($78 with tax) and can be ordered by sending an email to hawaii@one-island.org. (Worms are available locally by special arrangement. We also recommend the book ‘ Worms Eat My Garbage’.)
