Turtle Island Farmers’ Market Alliance

TI FM

The Turtle Island Farmers’ Market Alliance project is linking 12 rural farmers’ markets, 125 farms and ranches, and engage 5,000 SNAP EBT users in a tri-state initiative to increase local fresh food availability and consumption. We will launch a two phase initiative in Hawaii, California and Washington, serving 8 Markets beginning in 2015, adding 4 more markets in late 2016. Project partner markets have SNAP participation rates below 2.4% (national average is 2.5%) and are eager to boost SNAP/EBT transactions to expand fresh food access, increase small farm income, and build strong community support for the markets.

Over three years, the project will provide capacity building, outreach and branding support to the participating markets’ boards/managers with technical support/ training for stakeholders and EBT-qualified vendors. Our consumer connections strategy is to engage low-income households in fun and informative learning opportunities that build a better understanding of what local foods are available, what farmers’ markets offer, why keeping small farms in business is good for the local economy and the environment and great recipes for using local foods. These engagements will take place at farmers’ markets, in local school gardens, and at senior centers, rural health clinics, churches, tribal centers, and other locations that low income households already frequent and where they are accustomed to learning about food, nutrition and economic programs.
