VISTA Volunteer Opportunities

VISTA positions for One Island Sustainable Living Center : 2013-2016

Next anticipated application cycle will be open August-September 2013

The primary community service projects VISTAs will be working on 2013-2016 are No Fruit Left Behind – a food gleaning anti-hunger project, and The Same Canoe Community Garden Project – a school and nonprofit garden network anti-poverty project. The goals are to relieve poverty and improve food and nutrition access. The VISTA positions will help with those activities as well as workshops and festivals, and will also have specific capacity building roles in Volunteer Development and Partnership Development. Both are a combination of hands-on community work and behind the scenes project development and management time. The Volunteer Development position includes some agricultural work developing systems to help our volunteer-supported farm run more productively. The Partership Development position will be generating collaborative relationships nationwide.

How it Works

The VISTA program offers 12 month full time volunteer positions that earn each volunteer $12,800 a year plus an end year bonus of $1,500 cash or $5,500 towards education costs (past or future). They offer medical benefits and 20 days of personal or sick leave.  While we have rustic temporary tent camping options, the general idea is that volunteers will find a modest room rental nearby with in walking distance. VISTA wants the volunteers to live right in the community they serve, at a similar income level.
Positions run December-December and include two trainings, one in California and one in Hawaii. Couples with suitable skill sets are also invited to apply.
